He was predeceased by: his grandparents, Henrik, Viola Elmstrand, Paul and Jill Olson. He is survived by: his mother Sara Elmstrand; his wife Cindy Castruita-Ontiveros; his children, María and Mateo; his in-laws, Norma and Carlos Castruita; his siblings, Becky Ruth Johnson (Erik), Tricia Cassidy (Pat), Mary Elmstrand and Erik Elmstrand (Carissa); and his brothers-in-law, Carlos Castruita (Brianna Miller) and Erik Castruita (Gabby). He is also survived by 10 nieces and nephews, many aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and coworkers.
