He was predeceased by: his parents, John Smeby and Doris Smeby (Teigland); his sister Nancy; his parents-in-law, Neil and Florence Knutson; and his siblings-in-law, Roger, Randy Knutson, Patti Smeby and Kandy Knutson.

He is survived by: his wife Rochelle Knutson of Grygla; his children, Nicholas (Lisa) of Swanville and Gretchen of Grygla; his grandchildren, John, Samuel, Oliver, Madeline and Violet; his siblings, Jim (Eileen) of Fertile, Paul (Marie), Pam Mostrom (Tim) of Grygla and JoAnn Orpen (John) of Battle Lake; and his brother-in-law Perry Hubbard of Panama City, Panama..
