He was predeceased by: his parents, George Herbert and Ruby Herbert (Haskins); his wife Betty; his grandson Justin Johnson; and his siblings, Vernon, Gerald, Donald, Eleanor and Joyce.

He is survived by: his children, David Herbert, Jim Herbert (Terrie), Patty Johnson (Donn Eggen), Peggy Timmer (Dwayne) and Nancy Scott (Leroy); his sister-in-law Jean Bruggeman; and his son Curt. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren.
