He was predeceased by: his parents, Melti Mattson and Ellen Mattson (Maki); his sister Mavis Elmore; his nephew Daniel Elmore; and his brother-in-law Irv Boutang.

He is survived by: his wife Patricia Boutang of Esko; his children, Les Mattson of Two Harbors and Amy Mattson of Duluth; his sister Donna Juntunen (Chum) of Esko; his grandsons, Joshua (Kiarra) and Justin Kolodge; and his sisters-in-law, Linda Haus (Dan) and Lisbeth Boutang.
