He was predeceased by: his parents, Frank Bates and Nellie Bates; his wife Delores May Wass of Rosholt; his grandson Ryan; and his great grandchildren, Isla Grace and Nora.
He is survived by: his children, Joleen Johnston (Mike) of Cando, ND, Connie Lunde of Fargo, ND, Tim Bates (Janis) of Elbow Lake, Pauline Martinson (James) of Ashby and David Bates (Denise) of Dalton; his brother Donald Bates (Marilyn) of Fargo; and his foster son Charles Ritter of Hancock. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethlehem/West Elbow Lake Church, Knute Nelson Hospice Care, or donor's choice.
