He was predeceased by: his siblings, Marlin (Violet), Leslie (Adeline), Gailard (Shelby), Paul and Ruth Ashbacher (Dawson); and his brother-in-law Charles Fetketter.
He is survived by: his wife Lila; his children, Richard (Sue) of Eitzen and Karen Ness (Eric) of Caledonia; his grandchildren, Seth, Zachary, Clare, Jed Kasten, Alyvia, Maria, Garrett and Grant Ness; his sister Delores Fetketter of Spring Grove; and his sister-in-law Patricia Kasten of La Crescent.
