He was predeceased by: his parents, Patricia Karels and Charles Karels. He is survived by: his wife Theresa "Teri"; his daughter Sarah (Ivan Munkres); and his siblings, Colleen Lind (Stuart), Mary Beth Schleif (Brad), Katherine Karels and Eugene (Ann).

Memorials are preferred to the Free BSD Foundation or Environmental Defense Fund.
