He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Smitherman and Tressie Smitherman (Horton); his son Gary Smitherman; his sister Delene Roberson; and his siblings-in-law, Sherman Roberson, James Webb, Jerry Edge and Jean Smitherman.
He is survived by: his wife Henrietta (Scherb); his children, Jody Harms (Tom) of Hutchinson, MN, Suzanne Milbeck (Tim) of Dawson, MN and Diana Eldridge (Bill) of Rosemount, MN; his grandchildren, Alison Gamboni (Ryan), Sarah Cerney (Max), Cameron Harms, Brittany Torgerson (Ross), Courtney Sinclair (Ryan), Kierstynn Milbeck, Alex Littlefield (Jason), Jeremy Eldridge, Robert Smitherman and Michael Smitherman; his great grandchildren, Eva, Mya Gamboni, Beckett Torgerson and Ledger Sinclair; and his siblings, Doris Webb of Helena, AL, Homer Smitherman (Sarah) of Alabaster, AL, Mary Ada Edge of Delta, AL, Barbara Moore (Robert) of Auburn, AL and Ronnie Smitherman (Martha) of Columbiana, AL..
