He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Backes and Secunda Backes. He is survived by: his children, Carol Hermel (Linden), David Backes (Sue), Mary Yackley (Bill), Elizabeth Herberg (Wayne) and Joseph Backes (Cari); his grandchildren, Jermey, Melissa, John, Garrett, Stephanie, Andrew, Grant, Heather, Austin, Samantha, Madelyn, Elena and Samuel; his great grandchildren, Valerie, Maisie, Devin, Marlo, Lily, Evie, James, Isaac, Ryleigh, Logan, Amelia, Lauren and Russell; his great great grandchildren, Lana and Casey; and his sister Marilyn Sayles. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, along with many nephews and nieces and numerous friends.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 29th 2024 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the St John's Catholic Church (106 N 4th St, Darwin, MN 55324-6016). A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, October 29th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the St. John's Catholic Church (106 N 4th St, Darwin, MN 55324-6016).
