He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Schmidt (Pearl Schmidt) and Pearl Schmidt; his former wife Linda DeYoung; his sister Mary Anne; and his cousins, Joey and Mary Jensen.
He is survived by: his wife Barb Nelson of Crosslake, MN; his cousin Sherman Nelson; his nephews, Thomas Johnston and Richard Johnston; and his niece Kathy Tremmel. He is also survived by five great-nieces and a great-nephew.
