He was predeceased by: his parents, Medardus Backes and Bertha Backes (Phillippi); his siblings, Vera Scherer, Mary Cotter, Dan, Allen, John and Timothy; his siblings-in-law, Vivian Backes and Alcuin "Al" Scherer; and his parents-in-law, Joseph Moehrle and Margaret Moehrle.
He is survived by: his wife Bernadine Moehrle; his children, Ann Backes Merritt (Jason) and Charles "Chuck" Backes (Jennifer); his grandchildren, Courtney Barsness (Dylan), Heather Dodge (Jake Johnson), Gabriel Backes, Peyton Backes, Nathaniel Backes and Benjamin Backes; his great grandchildren, Serenity Hagberg and Michaela Johnson; his siblings, Walter Backes (Mary) and Jean Becker (John); and his siblings-in-law, Ed Cotter, Marcy Backes, Joanne Lies (Mike), Mary Flint (Denis), Eileen Norman (Steve), LuAnn Hesse (Jerry), Martin Moehrle (Vicki) and Joseph (Sandy). He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and dear friends.
Memorials are preferred to Itasca Community College Foundation and the Grand Rapids Area Community Foundation, where an account has been established for the family to send memorials to the many organizations Will was passionate about.
