He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth Mertes and Connie Mertes; and his siblings, Ken "Pooh" Mertes, Warren "Swede" Mertes and Joy Mettler.

He is survived by: his wife Betty Jane Brown; his daughters, Connie Krueth (Rick), Christie Gibeau (Michael) and Cindy May (Michael); and his siblings, Bruce Mertes (Gerry), Brian Mertes, Tom Mertes and Judy Weisenburger. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren.
