He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Hjalmer and Hilma Mattinen (Esala); his wife Judy Hughes; his siblings, Carl and Mavis; his brothers-in-law, Gilbert Doten and Richard Wilhelm; his niece Lisa; and his aunt Lempi Esala.
He is survived by: his sons, Joseph (Jody) of Wrenshall and John (Holly) of Esko; his grandchildren, Ashley, Benjamin, Allison and Andrew; his siblings-in-law, Ronald (Bernice) and Claudia (Ron); and his close friend Gretchen Matuszak. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
