She was predeceased by: her parents, Erna Goehring and Arnold Goehring; her sister Gertrude Boyum; and her brothers-in-law, Earlo Boyum and Roland Pederson.

She is survived by: her sons, Kiet Phan and Mohammad Mohammad; her husband John Yackel; her children, Margaret Yackel-Juleen (Mark), Peter Yackel (Alison Morse), Carl Yackel (Jackie Haft) and Jean Foster; her grandchildren, Andrew, Elizabeth, Eli, Isaac, Frances, Jamishin, Jeanette, Jeana and Mike; and her sister Jean. She is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren.

“I just can not believe Eleanor is gone for a while now. Our family just heard and saddened beyond measure. Eleanor and John have done a lot for our family, Oromo community in MN, and all Oromos as a nation around the world. She was a strong voice of justice for the oppressed, a helper of the needy, so concerned for human being and she did whatever is in her power to make a difference in people's lives. I am very sorry that we couldn't even be at her funeral and say the last good bye. We love you Eleanor. You were amazing”
