He is survived by: his mother Marcella Van Dam (Rylaarsdam); his wife Shela; his children, Jeremy and Abby; his siblings, Mark Van Dam (Paula), Amy Runia (Corwin) and Curt Van Dam (Kim); his parents-in-law, Earl and Marsha Blom; his sister-in-law Deb Stanelle (Dave); his stepsiblings, Jason Groen (Kyle) and Julie Sherman (Jim); and his nieces and nephews, Katie, Jacob, Joshua Van Dam, Evan, Daniel Runia, Carter, Levi Van Dam, Nathan, Yanzi Stanelle, Kayla, Josh Loomis and Sarah Stanelle. He is also survived by nephews, family members and friends.

On December 12, 2021, Al died at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD from complications from COVID.
