Laurel Sundberg wrote a sympathy message

“John was a coach, mentor, and friend. I'm shocked, sad, and my heart goes out to his family and friends. This is too soon to say goodbye. John changed my trajectory in ski racing, introduced me to and coached me through many years of bike racing. He was a skilled athlete and fantastic coach. He was a great friend. I'm so grateful I knew him. He will be remembered.”

Steve Young wrote a sympathy message

“About 10 years ago while rollerskiing at Carver Park, I saw John coaching a group of adult skiers at Carver park, which I later learned was essentially some of his cycling friends he was helping to transform into skiers. I asked if I could join the group, and he kindly let me join. Training under John's guidance was great. He was super patient, treated all with great respect regardless of skill level, and extremely knowledgeable. A great loss to the Nordic skiing family. - Steve Young”

Kara Bancroft wrote a sympathy message

“This is such a loss for the skiing community. I was lucky enough to be coached by John many years ago and will forever be thankful for the countless things I learned from him. I've enjoyed reconnecting with him while he's been coaching at St Louis Park, where I now teach. It makes me smile to think of all the lucky kids who have gotten to learn from such an amazing guy - patient, extremely knowledgeable, calm, kind, and so caring. I will greatly miss seeing his him out on the ski trails.”
