He was predeceased by: his wife Margot Ardis Steensgard; his brother Raymond Steensgard; and his grandsons, Michael Christian Steensgard and Benjamin Robert Steensgard. He is survived by: his children, Mark (Dawn) of St. Francis, Paul (Annette) of Champlin, David (Ann) of Burnsville and Dawn Strong (Lee) of Zimmerman. He is also survived by many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred in Robert's name to Alzheimer's Association of Minnesota.
