He was predeceased by: his parents, Arnold Schmalz and Louise Schmalz (Braun); his wife Esther Tokkesdal; his parents-in-law, John and Dora Tokkesdal; his stepmother-in-law Annie Tokkesdal; his son LeRoy Schmalz; his granddaughter Christine Schmalz; his brothers-in-law, Rudy Tokkesdal and Jim Aufderheide; his brother Ortwin Schmalz; and his sister-in-law Lucille Schmalz.
He is survived by: his children, Larry Schmalz (Roxanne) of Buffalo Lake, Susan Dahmes (Doug) of Buffalo Lake and Dale Schmalz (Cheryl) of Buffalo Lake; his grandchildren, Chad Schmalz (Dayna) of Buffalo Lake, Jennifer Abrahamson (Brad) of Shakopee, Brandon Karnik (Beth) of Buffalo Lake, Nicole Schaufler (Ryan) of Cedar Mills, Brent Schmalz (Laura) of Buffalo Lake, Josh Schmalz (Kelsey Glasser) of Buffalo Lake and Carly Schmalz of Oakdale; his great grandchildren, Owen, Anna, Ella Schmalz, Ashlyn, Brooke, Gracelyn Karnik, Hudson Abrahamson, Henry, Roman Schmalz, Bentley, Maverick and Lincoln Schmalz; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Austin Rose, Hannah Glasser and Hailey Glasser; and his sisters-in-law, Sylvia Aufderheide of New Ulm and Joyce Tokkesdal of Buffalo. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
