He was predeceased by: his parents, Dean Cates and Florence Cates (Johnson); and his sister Connie Shella. He is survived by: his wife Nancy Sommerville; his son Dean Cates (Katie) of Encino, CA; his grandchild Jameson Cates; his daughter Elizabeth Faulstick (Ryan) of Minneapolis, MN; his grandsons, Grayson and Graham Faulstick; his son Joe Cates (Gwen) of Bloomington, MN; his grandchildren, Penelope and Fiona Cates; his former wife Nancy Cates of Minneapolis; and his sister Lisa Lano (Jack) of Little Falls, MN. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

He was a member of the Shriners, Lions Club and donated frequently to Alzheimer's Research.
