He was predeceased by: his wife Joreen; his son-in-law Byron Ross Sr; his grandson Van Stangel; his great grandchild Dominick O'Berg; and his siblings, Leonard Root, Foster Root, Melvin Root, Gene Root, William Root, Russell Root, Irene Stolzman, Rose Abbott, Viola Starkey and Grace Braford.
He is survived by: his daughters, Vickie Root of Grand Rapids, MN, Rilla Varin of Grand Rapids, MN, Karen Ross of Cohasset, MN, Patricia Hill of Grand Rapids, MN and Jacqueline Olander (Noel) of Grand Rapids, MN; and his sister Norma Bartell of Grand Rapids, MN. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
