He was predeceased by: his mother Pearl Townsend (Forslof); his children, Dana Townsend (Steve Johnson), Dan Townsend (Rita), Amy Connors (Kevin), Jeff Townsend (Angela) and Caroline Townsend Smith (Scott); his former wife Sue; his father Charles Townsend; and his sisters, Mary Townsend, Dorothy Casserly (Townsend) and Katherine Jean Berg (Townsend).
He is survived by: his wife Susan Stromwell; and his grandsons, Jack and Sean Townsend. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce (acting one year as president) and donated the land to the city for Townsend Park.
