He is survived by: his wife Lois Bates of Austin, MN; his children, Jody Bates (Cathy) of Austin, MN, Karen Montage of Forest City, IA and Jeff Bates of Kanawha, IA; and his grandchildren, Michele Ree (Jason), Michael Bates (Karen), Daniel Bates (Michelle), Hillary Swanson (Dan), Lydell Tapp (Stacy), Kiley Brown, James Bates (Aubrie), Alissa Montag, Jenessa Ochoa, Lindsay Bates, Colbie Sousa (Layton) and Dalton Bates (Rhiannon). He is also survived by 18 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
