He was predeceased by: his parents, Merrill Gilbert and Mabel Gilbert (Hayden); and his grandson Nathan McFarland. He is survived by: his former spouse Arlys Hellickson; his close friend Joanne Clark of Austin; and his children, Cheryl Christopherson of Austin, Robert Gilbert (Kathy) of Omaha, Neb, Michael Gilbert (Diane) of Rochester, Susan Severson (Randy) of Austin and Jane McFarland (Peter Lange). He is also survived by ten grandchildren; thirty-seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorials may be directed towards Mower County Senior Advocacy or Sacred Heart Care Center.
