He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Akkerman and Gesine Akkerman (Ellingrod); and his siblings, Bertha, Margaret, Laura, Carl, Edward, Alvin, Elmer, Edna, Doris and Donald.

He is survived by: his wife Ila Akkerman of Austin, Minnesota; his children, Jill Demmer (Reed) of Red Wing, Jack Akkerman (Rhonda) of Austin, Jane Chatlain (Denny) of Red Lodge and Jay Akkerman (Jackie) of Austin, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Liza, Hannah, Kalle, Janna, Trista, Erik, Joshua and Lucas; and his great grandchildren, Hazel, Courtney, Isabelle, Mckenzie and Aria. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
