He was predeceased by: his parents, John Hakala and Lorna Hakala (Maki). He is survived by: his wife Sheila; his sons, Christian Hakala (Laura) of Northfield and Aaron Hakala (Christine) of Markham; his grandchildren, Aila, Milena, Milo and Benjamin; and his sister Shirley Peak (Larry) of Duluth. He is also survived by five nieces and nephews.
