He was predeceased by: his parents, Miles Smith and Ethel Smith (McDermott); his sons, Doyle Smith and Bradley Smith; his son-in-law John McCormack; and his siblings, Milton Smith (Lucretia), Hap Smith (Joan), Bea Button (Arby) and Gladys Knobloch (Levi).

He is survived by: his wife Erna; his children, Ronda McCormack, Jymm Smith (Judy), Brenda Schout (Mark) and Karen Van Koevering (Kelly); his grandchildren, Patti Klemmet (Patrick), John McCormack (Lisa), Luke Hackney, Andrew Schout (Katie), Erin Schout, Kaleigh Schout, Kyle Van Koevering (Tiffanie), Alex Van Koevering and Maxton Van Koevering (Karly); his sister Ardith Long (Lee); and his sisters-in-law, Irma Wamhoff, Gladys Schultz and Betty Nolting. He is also survived by many extended family and friends.
