He was predeceased by: his parents, Courtney Novak and Frieda Novak (Wilkens). He is survived by: his wife Joyce Wales; his sons, Brian Novak, Scott Novak (Kristy), Eric Novak (Melissa) and Mark Novak (Liz); and his brothers, Donald "Crow" Novak (Carol) and Derwood "Doe" Novak (Laurie). He is also survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Southeast Michigan Land Conservancy.
