He was predeceased by: his mother Ruby Lee Pitts Thomas; and his wife Catherine. He is survived by: his father Benjamin Thomas; his children, Oliver Thomas (Dawn) of Michigan, Oluyemi Thomas, Kenneth Thomas of Michigan, Bobbie Allen of Ohio, Helen Wilson and Diane Onuigbo of Michigan; his sisters, Betty Floyd of Alabama and Merkie Miller of California; and his grandson Eugene Wilson IV. He is also survived by "son" and Eugene embraced as a "father"; fourteen great grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and caring friends.
Obi Thomas received a Certificate of Recognition in June as "Mister Juneteenth" of 2024 from the Weslyn A. Bennett Foundation.
