He was predeceased by: his parents, Ira Thornton and Gerty Thornton; his son Christopher; his grandson Eric; his brother Michael; and his brother-in-law John Beerman.

He is survived by: his wife Patricia "Patty" Thornton; his children, Shanon Rederstorf (Bill), Anthony Thornton and Joseph Thornton (Brenda); his grandchildren, Billy (Misty), Aaron (Jordan), Faith, Alicia (John), Anthony II, Amanda (Tyler), Grace (Kyle), Jayce and Christopher; his great grandchildren, Avery, Elise, Grey, Teddy, Daniel, Austyn, Archer, Ashton, Atreyu, River, Rhett, Navy, Annabelle, Kenzington and Kynlee; and his siblings, Carole Beerman and Robert Thornton (Maryann). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was held on Sunday, January 5th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the Cedar Creek Alliance Chapel (7193 Sweeter Rd, Twin Lake, MI 49457).
