It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ruth Ellen Mapes (Troy, Michigan), who passed away on October 17, 2023, at the age of 99, leaving to mourn family and friends. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

She was predeceased by: her husband Frank; and her brothers, Walter Berg (late Joyce) and Frederick Berg (late Marge). She is survived by: her children, Edward L., Gordon F. (Susan) and Shirley D. Mapes; her grandchildren, Frank, Joseph, Charles, Nicole, Michelle and Edward; her sister Annette Peterson (late Frederick); and her pet Champ.

“Missy, I am so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. Hard to believe that she was 99. I think of you often and have very fond memories of the wonderful young lady and superior athlete you were. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to coach you in softball and basketball. As I recall your mom was quite upset with me that you left tennis I think to play basketball for me. “I was a student of Mrs. Mapes in the mid 70's at Costello Elementary School. I went through a bit of a hard time in the second grade. Mrs. Mapes was the teacher that made me feel like things would get better. She was upbeat, friendly and so encouraging. (She also had those really cool smelly markers and she let me color as much as I wanted!) In her room, I belonged and was cared about. She made a deep impact on me and many other children. Thank you, Mrs. Mapes. Rest in peace.”
