He was predeceased by: his parents, William "Harlo" Smith and Ruth Smith (Cornwell); his daughter Carol DeCraene; and his siblings, Janice McFarland and Douglas Smith.
He is survived by: his wife Josephine Hovey; his sons, Steven Smith (Sue) of Traverse City and Eric Smith (Sue) of Gaylord; his grandchildren, Todd, Sheri, Beth, Amy, Christopher, Jason, Shelly, Julie and Andy; and his brother Russell (Edna). He is also survived by his 15 great-grandchildren, and his five great-great-grandchildren.
