He was predeceased by: his son Robert Schmidt; and his brother Lawrence Schmidt. He is survived by: his parents, Frederick Schmidt and Clara Schmidt (Bollinger); his wife Eileen; his children, Raymond Schmidt (Karen), Donald Schmidt (Annie), James Schmidt (Sheri), Roxanne Ruetz (Lawrence) and Terri Swanson (Alan); and his siblings, Norman Schmidt (Martha), Arnold Schmidt (Joyce), Myron "Windy" Seger (Judy), Mary Segur, Velda Seger, Donna Eighmey, Janet May and Darlene Buehler (Jim). He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson.
