He was predeceased by: his parents, John Merren and Leora Merren; his stepfather Albert Smith; his grandson Joey Rysdyk; his niece Kim Merren; his nephews, Phillip and Scott Merren; and his brothers, Bill and Don Merren.

He is survived by: his wife Pat Merren; his children, Anita Groelsma, John, Michael (Lynn) and Timothy Merren (Alyssa); and his sister Mary Crosby (Chuck). He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.
