He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Herman and Frieda Eliza Schafer (Sell); his wife Madeline Ruth Lange; his sons, Jack and Jeffery Schafer; his siblings, Blanche, Myrtle Schafer and Paul Schafer; and his siblings-in-law, Helen Schafer, Barbara Schafer and Gerald Schultz.
He is survived by: his children, Susan Cunningham-Enos (Frank) of Onsted, Keith Schafer (Cheryl) of Adrian, Alan Schafer (Tracey) of Onsted, Scott Schafer (Laura) of Onsted and Ruthann Austin (Jeffrey) of Anchorage, AK; his siblings, Howard Schafer (Joan), Joyce Schultz, Melvin Schafer, Ilene Schroeder (Edward) and Joel Schafer (Joyce); his grandchildren, Shannon Miller (Justin), Robert Cunningham, Christopher Cunningham, Andrew Schafer (Sara), Gregory Schafer, Laura Jolliff (Adam), William Schafer (Sarah), A. J. Schafer (Sarah), Kelsey Schafer, Jack Schafer, Katie Austin, Anna Schafer, Tyler Austin, Claire Schafer and Chloe Schafer; and his great grandchildren, Thomas Cunningham, Madelyn Miller, Sophia Miller, Elliott Schafer, Peyton Schafer and Riley Jo Schafer.
