James Robert Whitson Obituary

James Robert Whitson, affectionately known as Jim to his friends and family, passed away unexpectedly on February 24, 2025, at the age of 69 in Standish, Michigan. Born on September 6, 1955, in Bellaire, Michigan, to the late Dolores (Walker) Keeney. Jim was a man whose life was characterized by his loving nature, generosity, and thoughtful demeanor.

Jim is survived by his devoted wife Nancy (Stagray), his beloved son Kyle (Heather), and his cherished granddaughter Gwendolyn J. He also leaves behind his caring sisters, Penny (David Rusztowicz) Wood and Donna Thomas, as well as his sister-in-law Sandi Whitcomb. Jim was preceded in death by his brother Michael Whitcomb and stepfather Wallace Keeney.

After graduating from Standish Sterling High School, Jim went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Navy for four years, followed by another four years in the Coast Guard. His commitment to service was a testament to his character and his love for his country. Upon returning to civilian life, Jim became a well-known figure in his community as the owner of Kitzman's Flowers & Gifts in Standish, Michigan, and as a dedicated bus driver for Standish Sterling Schools. His work, both in his business and with the school district, allowed him to touch the lives of many in the Standish area.

Jim's involvement in his community was extensive. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree, his volunteer work with AYSO youth soccer and Cub Scout Pack #3127 showcased his commitment to nurturing and guiding the youth of his community. Furthermore, Jim's involvement with Venture Crew 7188 and his support of FFA summer recreation at Standish Sterling Schools were further proof of his dedication to service and the well-being of others.

Those who knew Jim will remember him as a man who lived his life with purpose and kindness. His generosity knew no bounds, and he was always ready to lend a helping hand or a listening ear. Jim's thoughtful nature made him a cherished friend and a pillar in his community. He had the remarkable ability to make everyone around him feel valued and loved.
