Charles Lee Hundley Obituary

Charles Lee Hundley, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother, passed away peacefully on January 3, 2025, in the comfort of his home in Standish, Michigan. Born on January 31, 1944, in Gladwin, Michigan, to the late Kenneth and Vera (Thornton) Hundley, Charles grew up in a loving family and carried that warmth throughout his life. At the age of 80, he left this world with the love of his family enveloping him, a testament to the life he built and the bonds he fostered.

In 1979, Charles married Thelrene Crouterfield, the love of his life, in a ceremony in Standish. Their union was blessed with over four decades of shared dreams and mutual support. Charles is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Thelrene, their son Charles Jr. (Cathy) Hundley of California, their daughter Leslie Hundley of California, three grandchildren; Courtney (fiancé Clint) Hundley of California, Philip (Emily) Hundley of Ohio, two great-grandchildren, Remington, and Cooper Hundley of Ohio. His brothers, David (Fern) Hundley and Rob (Deb) Hundley, along with many nieces, nephews, friends, and his very special companion, his dog Rosco, also survive him. His parents and brother Donald predeceased him.

Charles joined the U.S. Navy when he was 17 years old. He served in the early years of the Vietnam war 1961-1964 in the USS Waccamaw and the USS Zelima, after discharge he joined the merchant Marines. He loved his country and served proudly. He was a true patriot.

Charles began his career as a journeyman carpenter in Vallejo, California, showcasing his skill and dedication to craftsmanship. In 1975, he returned to Michigan, where he and Thelrene owned and operated their own business, C&T Pallet Mill, for 13 years. Following the business's closure, Charles found a new calling at Standish Hospital, where he worked in the Engineering Department for 22 years. He became a familiar and friendly face to many, retiring in 2016 after a fulfilling career.

Known for his love of the outdoors, Charles relished in camping, hunting, and fishing. He found joy in simple pleasures like going for rides, tinkering with electronics, and spending quality time with his beloved dog, Rosco. A meticulous man, he took pride in mowing the lawn, ensuring it was always well-manicured—a reflection of his attention to detail and care for his surroundings.

Charles's sense of humor and generosity were as boundless as his love for his family. He connected with friends and loved ones through his daily Facebook blog, sharing childhood memories, weather updates, and informative tidbits, all infused with his unique and engaging perspective.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 12 noon at the Divine Shepherd Christian Community with Pastor John Touscuik presiding. Family and friends may pay their respects at the church from 10 am until the time of service. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jorge Hernandez, medical staff at Covenant Harrison/Cooper, Mary Free Bed and Residential Home Health and Hospice for the compassionate care given to Charles.
