He was predeceased by: his wife Carole; and his siblings, David Gates, Charles Gates, Virgil Gates (Judy), Leroy Gates, Ray Gates, Nancy Young (Henry) and Linda Gates.

He is survived by: his children, Dwayne Gates (Ana) and Stephanie Gates; and his brother Glen "John" Gates (Becky). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice or American Liver Foundation.
