Raymond Nickels wrote a sympathy message

“I am truly saddened by the loss of this unassuming giant. It was my privilege to have known Norm for many years and to have worked with him and learned from him on the ground and in the air at the Yankee Air Museum. Norm, who more than anyone was responsible for the acquisition and restoration of what is without question the finest flying B-17 in the world, was a man of quiet dignity, possessing a wealth of knowledge shared unselfishly and gracefully. One of the finest men I have ever known.”
