She was loved and cherished by many people including: her parents, Julius J. Krieger, Jr. and Theresa Keller Krieger; her spouse Douglas Washburn Smith; her children, James K. Smith, Michael Smith (Clara) of Chelsea, MI, Andrew Smith (Beatrice) of Lasne, Belgium Smith, Jeffrey Smith (Janet) of St. Joseph and Paula Smith (Jan) of Kitchener, Ontario; her daughter-in-law Martha Meeling Smith of Niles, MI; and her grandchildren, Michelle Schroeder (Thomas), Melissa Aldrich (Lance), Melody Patterson (Michael), Quinn Smith (Tera), EmmaLeigh Smith, Breann Farstvedt (John), Amber Smith, Ashley Anderson (Joseph), Joffrey Smith (Maria), Joanna Smith, Zachary Smith (Jennifer), Margaret Lagunas (Ruben), Justin Smith (Tricia) and Julie Martin (Jake). She was also cherished by 29 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in Madeleine's name may be directed to Birthright of St. Joseph, or to the James K. Smith Memorial Scholarship, care of the Lake Michigan Catholic School.
