He was predeceased by: his parents, Mildred and Louis; and his brother Charles Thompson. He is survived by: his wife Joan "Joanie"; his children, Cheryl Mercer (Hank Elzinga), Bonnie Tanner (Dan) and Randy Pratt (Emily); and his grandchildren, Daniel (Alyssa), Jonathon (Allie), David, Jacob (Kaleigh), Taylor, Andrew, Bethany, Mason and Asher.
In lieu of flowers, Dwight has requested contributions be made to the Rockford Area Museum or to Joan to help cover medical expenses.
