He was predeceased by: his parents, Gelmer Winkels and Pauline Winkels (Peuler); and his granddaughter Katelin Cassidy. He is survived by: his wife Shelley L. Winkels; his children, April Cassidy (Wayne), Jessica Winkels, Ty Winkels, Flore Amartey (Joseph), Abe Winkels and Emeli Winkels; his grandchildren, Sam, Andrew and Gabe; his sisters, Sharon Hall (Ray), Deb Shepard (Mike) and Cindy VanDam (Ron); and his pet Willow. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Memorials are suggested to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources () to support their continued free fishing classes for children.
