He was predeceased by: his father James Flynn; his wife Ellen Flynn (Peltier); and his sisters, Margaret Carney (late Patrick) and Maureen Flynn. He is survived by: his children, James Flynn (Colleen), Kathleen Galbraith (Richard), Thomas Flynn (Heather Watson), Robert Flynn and Christine Hickey (Brian); and his grandchildren, Cassie, Meaghan, Brady, Rick, Dylan, Logan and Kellan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorials in James' name may be made to the Gilda's Club or Crohn's & Colitis Foundation.
