He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Sylvester Gates, Sr. and Rachel Jane (Goughnour); and his wife Esther. He is survived by: his mother-in-law Esther Sarah Remick; his children, Debbie Rhein (Jim), Walter "Butch" Gates (Patti), Brenda Pruccoli (Giulio), William Gates (Deborah) and Wesley Gates (Stacey); and his brothers, David Gates (Amy), Russell Gates (Lois) and Donald Gates (Jean). He is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren.
Memorial donations are suggested to the Richmond First United Methodist Church.
