He was predeceased by: his parents, Morten Petersen and Mae Petersen (Richner); and his siblings, Kermit, Milton Petersen, Margaret Riley and Nellie Curry.
He is survived by: his wife Kimiko Yamada; and his sister Kathleen LaTrielle.
Sherman and Kimiko also established the Petersen Promise Fund at South Dakota Community Foundation, to provide financial support for college to graduates of Irene/Wakonda High School.
