He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard A. Johnston and Edith O. Johnston (Carlson); his brother Reed Johnston; and his niece Bridget Cullimore. He is survived by: his wife Carol Johnston (Ogontz) of Rapid River; his children, Richard Johnston of Gladstone, Mark Johnston of Rapid River and Janet Johnston of Escanaba; his stepson Steve Daigneau (Mary Fay) of Menominee, MI; his grandchildren, Jacob, Wyatt, Zach, Kyley, Landen, Brody and Brayden; and his brother Dan Johnston of Rapid River. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
