He was predeceased by: his wife Olivia Vernoy; his sisters, Dinah of Washington and Theresa Jefferson; and his children, Meredith Brown, Merchant Brown, III and Tandalaya Brown.

He is survived by: his daughters, Judy Brown of Wheaton, Diane Fareed of Lithonia and Brenda Long of Pullman; and his close friend William King.
