He was predeceased by: his parents, James and Lucille McDowell Sr. (Isom); his former wife Virgie McDowell; his sons, Robert and Ronald McDowell; his stepson John Collver; and his daughter-in-law Paula McDowell.

He is survived by: his wife Nancy McDowell; his children, Jeffrey McDowell, Kenneth McDowell (Tammy), Douglas McDowell (Maria), Catherine DeCaen (Neil) and Daniel McDowell; his stepchildren, Mike Collver (Terri) and Trudy Bitler (Darrell); his grandchildren, Joshua McDowell, Patty King, Tom Mohlmaster, James McDowell II, Snowy DeCaen, Thaddaeus DeCaen, Catilin McDowell, Douglas McDowell Jr., Angie Fuentes, Lance Bitler, Graham Bitler and Grace Bitler; and his parent-in-law Tommie Nicholas (MaryAlice). He is also survived by many great grandchildren.
