He was predeceased by: his parents, Luella Phalen (Applegarth) and John Sr. Phalen; and his brother Rusty Phalen. He is survived by: his wife Sharon Phalen (Furbee); his sons, Troy Phalen (Teri), Jeffrey Phalen and Tyson Phalen (Julie); his grandchildren, Zachary Phalen (Meghan), Lexis "Lizzie" Phalen, Chase Phalen, Megan Phalen, Jake Phalen and Emily Phalen; his sister Candace Busdiecker (Wesley); his nieces and nephews, Hailey (Tyler), Morgan, Justin (Isela) and Katie (Elliott Sr.); and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Jonathon, Nokomus, Connor, Andrea, Selma, Emilia, Jaxson, Maverick and Luella of Elliot. He is also survived by extended family members, friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in John's name may be made to Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
