He was predeceased by: his parents, Henry Barens and Audrey Barens; his stepfather Walter Bebee; and his brothers, Mike and Dale.

He is survived by: his wife Deborah; and his children, David Barens and Sally Ryan (Philip). He is also survived by his grandchildren and his nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may be made to the Brain Injury Association of Michigan.
