He was predeceased by: his parents, Primitivo Ortega and Mecaila Ortega (Carizeles); and his brother Jesse Ortega. He is survived by: his wife Manuela; his children, Lupe Canales, Michelle Ortega, Joe Ortega, Jr., Robert Ortega, Mary Lou Ortega and Armando Ortega; and his grandchildren, Kristina Canales, Jason Canales, Benito Canales and Ivan Ortega-Rooze.
